The French Curriculum

Differentiated provision to cater for a wide range of skill levels

Our French curriculum is based on Chris Quigley's Curriculum. Our approach to teaching French involves fun and practical activities in the early stages, immersing pupils in listening, speaking, and writing exercises. As children's understanding and fluency improve, we place more emphasis on translation, writing, and understanding the grammatical structure of the language. French lessons are taught from Year 1 to Year 6 (KS1-KS2), with one lesson per week in KS1 (Years 1 to 3) and two lessons per week in KS2 (Years 4 to 6). We cater to different levels of proficiency, offering beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes for native speakers. The key skills we focus on include reading fluently, writing imaginatively, speaking confidently, and understanding the culture of French-speaking countries.

French and Curriculum Enrichment

Why learn French?

Learning French from the start of Key Stage 1 (KS1) to the end of Key Stage 2 (KS2) education enables our children to develop stronger language skills, connecting different areas of study and emphasising unifying concepts in both Arabic and English language learning. This approach not only enhances their social skills but also fosters their interest and understanding of other cultures. Participating in French role plays and poetry recitations helps pupils develop their presentation skills and confidence. Learning French often enriches their travel experiences and can serve as a starting point for acquiring other languages, such as Spanish and Italian.

French Resources and Use of Digital Technology

Using apps to enhance the curriculum

To support our French curriculum, we utilise a variety of resources, including French stories for pupils to read and visual aids like French calendars and Euro currency. We also subscribe to "Languagenut," a French language learning application, which offers engaging listening, speaking, and reading activities for our children. Each child receives their login details, allowing them to access the application and benefit from its diverse range of activities.
